Willoughby Windows
The recession has closed hundreds of stores and thrown a monkey wrench in the dreams of many developers. However, rather than let abandoned storefronts sit vacant, this Brooklyn block is making the best out of the situation by turning into a makeshift art gallery.
“Willoughby Windows” is an art show that first went up this summer in 12 empty storefronts on Willoughby Street in downtown Brooklyn. The retail spaces, which used to house a variety of stores ranging from a bagel shop to a camera store, were bought out a couple years ago to make room for a new residential complex, but that project appears to have fallen through.
In order to make use of the dreary, empty spaces, Ad Hoc Art and MetroTech BID got several artists to take over the storefronts and turn them into something unique, eye-catching and thought-provoking. While it doesn’t take away the fact that numerous store owners were forced out, it’s good to see the space isn’t completely going to waste.
Here is a look at some of the pieces featured in the show:

Run This Town
More than 42,000 runners wound their way through all five boroughs yesterday during the annual ING New York City Marathon. The Brooklyn portion of the race went down Bedford Avenue, just a few blocks from the Good Conduct headquarters.
Congratulations to Meb Keflezighi, who became the first American to win the marathon since 1982. He completed the 26-mile run with an impressive time of 2:09:15.
